India is slowly and steadily acquiring the status of the global chronic disease capital. A combination of the “thrifty gene hypothesis” (i.e. a genetic predisposition towards obesity and diabetes) and sedentary lifestyles has brought us on the brink of a healthcare catastrophe.
By 2025, India will have the dubious distinction of having 70 million diabetics, 213 million hypertensives and 60 million arthritics. The cost of these including welfare losses is estimated to be a whooping Rs. 15,01,200 crores. According to the WHO repot – “Preventing Chronic Diseases - A vital investment”, 388,000,000 people will die in the next 10 years of a chronic disease. A significant proportion of this will be in India. Effective sustainable interventions and the knowledge to implement them have been shown to work in many countries. If existing interventions are used together as part of a comprehensive integrated approach by the government, the private sector and the civil society, the goal of preventing chronic diseases can be achieved.
Help your Body, an initiative by the Piramal Group, is a nation-wide crusade to partner the government in reducing the upward trend of chronic diseases. Our core values of knowledge, action and care drives us towards the goal of a healthy billion.
Guided by an eminent panel of top-notch healthcare professionals, noted thought leaders, NGO’s, industry confederations and thousands of civilians as crusaders, Help your Body was launched on August 16, 2008 by the Former President of India - Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Under the aegis of Help your Body, we intend bridging the existing health divide by adopting a 3-pronged approach of Awareness, Action and Sustenance.
The cumulative social and economic impact of the Help your Body initiative is bound to be immense. We aim to save a million productive lives and reduce disparities by minimizing economic loss and earning the nation Rs. 67,500 crores by 2015. It would help propel the thriving Indian economy with an all-inclusive growth.
